Biography

Having achieved AAA at A level (Maths, Physics, Chemisty) plus A for AS Further Maths & B for AS Electronics, Emma headed to Cardiff University to study an MPhys in Physics, gaining the prize for the highest Year 1 grades and achieving a 1st Class Honours degree. She then continued at Cardiff University to complete a PhD in "The Physics and Performance  of InGaAs Quantum Dot Lasers", presententing her work at several conferences, including LEOS 2003, the 16th Annual Meeting of the IEEE Lasers & Electro-Optics Society in Arizona.

Emma chose to study Physics for her degree in part due to the enthusiasm of her A level teachers for their subject, and hopes that she can inspire the same enthusiasm in her students. During her time in Cardiff she spent several months working for Techniquest, a science discovery centre, where she realised how much she enjoyed helping others to learn about science and how the world works. During her PhD she also gave several lectures to visiting 6th Form Students and also tutored undergraduates.

After bringing up her young children, Emma completed her PGCE through Aberystwyth University, specialising in Physics and Science. She then joined Ysgol Dewi Sant as a Maths teacher, with her students achieving 100% A*/A in her first year teaching A level mathematics. Over a period of 10 years working for the school she also taught GCSE Computer Science and A level & GCSE Physics, staying with the school when it transitioned to become Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi and working her way up to Head of Maths & Computing. In 2017 she was selected to be part of a Welsh Physics Teachers visit to CERN and as well as taking part in workshops, got to visit the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) underground service cavern.

Emma has since worked for Dr Frost Learning as a Freelance Question Generator, creating and coding interactive maths questions and responses, including the majority of the A level Mechanics questions on the site, as well as GCSE and Key Stage 3 questions. Alongside this and teaching, Emma has tutored many students for both maths and physics, helping them to improve their confidence in their subjects and ultimately gain higher grades.
